Sunlight and Shadows

The iconic image of

Sunshine on children,

A white picket fence, and

The Ozzie and Harriet kiss

Before the day begins

Is a delusion

That invites

Darkness to cut through

The veneer of joy,

Leaving just enough space

For disaster.

When the backdrop is dark

And slivers of light are

Permitted intermittently,

Loss is no surprise.

A life cast in shadows

Is a life unaccustomed

To unfettered joy.

It is a life of

Finding comfort

In the discomfiture.
